IMHO Jane Austen played with names   Written by JulieW (5/1/2008 8:28 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Names in Emma, penned by MarianneR

and their meaning /associations throught her novesl.

Maple Grove is associated with maples: trees that are capable of producing sugar, and hence the name of Mr Suckings "seat" has an association with making money from sugar( which was "code" for having made money through the slave trade).

JA's use of the name "Knightley" in addition to "knight-ly" associations of chivalry might also be a tribute to her brother, Edward, who took the name "Knight" after his "adoption " by the Knight family ,distant cousins of the Austens ,who, having no son of their own treated him as their heir.
