Emma and Mrs E parallels   Written by Dorothy A (4/30/2008 5:27 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Spiteful, penned by Rachel G
Are you new?

I had not realized the extent of these parallels, and thank you all for these excellent insights!

For my part, I don't quite see Emma and Mrs. Elton as being "mirror" images, and I don't see Emma as turning into Mrs E. I DO see Emma turning into a slightly more agreeable Lady Catherine of P&P, but no more on that on this board.

Is it simply JA's genius that makes Emma more sympathetic (to me), or is there something about Mrs. E. even worse than Emma? Would I find Mrs. E. more sympathetic if JA had written from HER point of view? Perhaps Mrs E has in her time exhibited the infinite (IMO) patience that Emma shows to Mr Woodhouse, though I rather doubt it. Mrs E inconsiderately tries to hijack the strawberry party; Emma is a very considerate hostess.

I'll have to keep thinking on this Emma/Mrs E angle. Thanks for opening my eyes!
