(I'm finally getting to join the Group Read!)

I also thought the scene with the gypsies was funny, and THINK it was meant to be so.

But, I read JulieW's post below about the perception of gypsies, and started to wonder if the hysterical jumping and fainting away by Miss Bickerton and Harriet were more justified than I give them credit for.

Or was JA painting the girls as rather silly?

Was Frank a hero, or was his service not as big a deal as Harriet is making it?
