Extremes   Written by Antoinette (4/30/2008 12:40 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Emma & Augusta mirror one another., penned by Rachel G
Are you new?

The differences is one of extremes. Mrs. Elton isn't so much a mirror of Emma as a magnified immage of Emma. Take the examples of snubbing the Martins and snubbing Harriet. Emma arranges for a private visit to be shorter than is polite given Harriet's visit. Mr. and Mrs. Elton arrange a very public snubbing of Miss Smith in a public place. They are deliberately cruel to her in a setting that will be seen by the entire town. Emma is shown as regretting hurting the Martins' feelings. Mrs. Elton is shown as reveling in hurting Harriet's.

Mrs. Elton isn't Emma's mirror she is Emma's warning. Keep it up kid and this is what you will become.
