unlike horses, and so were popular and cheap to run , in transportation terms.

JA and the ladies at Chawton Cottage had a donkey and cart, but JA recognised its limitations:

And as Diana Spurling's picture demonstrates, they do have somewhat independent tendencies ;-) Only the clueless Mrs E could imagine such a stupid scheme,and have such a romantic view of gypsies.
