Her idea about buying a donkey to arrive on seems ludicrous to me. For one thing the artificiality seems at variance with her idea of having everything "..as natural and simple as possible". I wonder if town-bred Augusta has ever actually ridden a donkey before - I understand that they can sometimes be somewhat uncooperative beasts... LOL!
I also have to laugh at the cool restraint of Mr Knightley's response;
I am put also in mind of Marie Antoinette playing at milkmaids at Versailles some thirty years or so earlier. Does Augusta imagine she is being stylish here? Was there actually a fashion for this sort of thing? If so, was it still fashionable, or could Augusta be rather behind the times with her pantomime of rustic idyll?
