a fondness for Miss Bates. For such a young man he is quite persistent about including her in the plans for the Ball, was most attentive to her on her arrival in the rain & escorting her & her niece into dinner & had borrowed her scissors.
I find it somewhat unaccountable of him when he had no time to visit at Hartfield the day after the ball that he should spend a half hour walking out to meet his horse farther on. Emma is so blown away by his rescuing Harriet from the gipsies that that incongruity appears to escape her.
