Funny because of the love symbolism they have, temptation, and also a seeming alert that Mr Martin is a good provider, as such. (In that he keeps a fertile food garden, in good neat order.) This would be an asset to any future wife, I would imagine. He has his trees right out the front like that, which seem to indicate in a subtle way he would be a good provider, as such. I hope this makes sense!

I wonder also if Harriet would be au fait with that kind of sentiment, through her readings?

Hope to read more about apples if anything comes up, JulieW! They are so ancient, and wonderful.
