It hasn't seemed to occur to Mrs. E. that the good people of Highbury might object, or at least look askance, if their vicar started living in such a showy way. In a society where everyone knew exactly how much money everyone else had, the townspeople would surely know how many servants the Eltons had, and hiring additional help for a party might be seen as the worst sort of showing off. Imagine the gossip!
