in consequence of the missive, A little lonely, a lot of hard work, penned by Tarn
This is so interesting. Something I love about JA's work is her acute social observation and her realism. Time and again she creates characters who are so real that we recognise them - the 'I know someone like that' effect. This really brings it home to me that, though society and culture may change, people remain very much the same in all the glorious variety of ther humanity.
But there is also a degree of caricature in some characters (eg Mr Collins). I have not encountered 'Miss Bates' in real life, and had wondered whether she was one of JA's caricatures. But now I learn that her behavioural quirks are quite recognisable and not uncommon for people in her situation. Thank you for your input Tarn - it is most illuminating.
