All your points make sense to me. I think it is hard to put ourselves in the shoes of someone like Miss Bates and really feel the narrowness of her life. Today a person in a similar situation has access many more inputs to feed their mental life - from radio or TV, even if they can't afford internet access. For Miss Bates the day to day minutiae are all she has.

Also, in a society so obsessed with gradations of social rank, I feel sure that Miss Bates must feel her genteel poverty most acutely.
