Are you new?

She is rather keen on dinners according to that pasage in Chapter 34.

Her card party could have been held in conjunction with a dinner. After eating a splendid dinner the most deserving of the Highbury citizens, of course , would then play cards.

I don't think she is penny pinching,but actually being overly showy in Highbury society.She is a fish out of water.....
