Seperate candles for card tables?   Written by MarianneR (4/24/2008 3:17 a.m.)
Are you new?

In ch. 34 we read that Mrs. Elton is a little shocked at the Highbury society for being a good deal behind hand in knowledge of the world and decides that in the course of the spring she must return their civilities by one very superior party; in which her card tables should be set out with their separate candles and unbroken packs in the true style, and more waiters engaged for the evening than their own establishment could furnish, to carry round the refreshments at exactly the proper hour, and in the proper order.

I can imagine that presenting more waiters could impress the guests and even unbroken card packs may show a certain wealth - but why on earth seperate candles? Were candles so expensive those days or was it just a new fashion having the room more inlighted than usual?
