Oh dear!   Written by nan duval (4/22/2008 8:19 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, How and where would you place Robert Martin?, penned by Mary-L
Are you new?

I was falling asleep as I wrote that post last night. I would never wish to slight Robert Martin, a farmer outstanding in his field, an innovative agriculturist, devoted brother & son & example to his peers, & likely to be at some point sitting in on meetings to discuss parish business when he gets a bit older.

I agree I would put him just under Mr. Cole. I feel a little like a traitor to my profession to undermine Mr. Perry's worth. Medicine then I believe was far less successful at health promotion or disease prevention than it is now, but in 200 years people may regard our current attempts as pretty primitive & feeble, so I think Mr. Perry needs to retain his respected position.

I would actually rank the Martin ladies above Emma as they spend more of their time on useful & rational employment, & have been willing to welcome Harriet, in spite of her questionable connections, with a very generous spirit (without embellishing her background with fantasies of nobility). I agree that Harriet ranks below Emma in the meritocracy, not because she's illegitimate (doesn't matter in a meritocracy) but because she's clueless.
