when the Knightleys visit at Christmas, Emma often thinks comments to her father verge on "dangerous territory". I wonder if it has anything to do with grief over is wife, and if Mr Woodhouse suffers from a kind of melancholia?

I think your points about him are exactly so, the family and friends do seem to keep him from feeling upset, with their topics.
