This is a notion that has been burning in me as the GR has progressed. JA's world Appears to me to be centered on the aristocracy, but what if the world--or at least the village of Highbury-- was a meritocracy instead? Here are my nominees for rule in each form:
Highbury, the Aristocracy:
Mr. Knightley--gentleman farmer, largest landowner, magistrate
Mr. Woodhouse--rich, ancient family, good spirited but not particularly useful
Emma--rich, ancient family, clever, talented, moderately accomplished, nosy, snooty, compassionate to poor
Mr. Weston--well to do, good old family, friendly, community minded
Mrs. Weston--intelligent, accomplished, sensible, good judgment, kind
Mr. Frank Churchill--Gentleman, likely heir to large estate, clever & charming
Mr. Elton--vicar, gives good sermons
Highbury, the Meritocracy:
Mr. Knightley--active, frugal, benevolent, loyal friend & just landlord & magistrate
Mr. Weston--energetic, friendly, community minded
Mrs Weston--intelligent, accomplished, sensible, good judgment, kind
Mrs. Goddard--educator
Jane Fairfax--very intelligent & accomplished; determined to become an educator
Mr. Cole-successful businessman, community minded
Mr. Perry--entertains Mr. Woodhouse, probably hasn't killed anyone
Emma--occasionally visits poor & sick
? Mr. Elton-vicar; serviceable sermons
Anyone care to add?
