Are you new?

This is my first proper read too, but I understood that the Jane's feelings Emma is pittying is what she assumed Jane must be feeling for Mr Dixon. She pities Jane for having fallen in love with an attached man, heroically trying to purge that love (Emma's version). Because of her pity Emma felt that she would not expose the origin of Jane's feelings to Frank, who was sitting next to her, anymore.
