I don't think Emma is being over sensitive here...Mr. Knightly is making a deliberate dig. We know that Emma thinks dancing is the one accomplishment in which she can equal Jane and Mr. Knightly obviously knows that, too. To me it seems a touch belittling to say nobody cares anything about the one thing she can legitimately enjoy and shine in. She knows she was shone up on the piano-I don't see any harm in her excitement about the ball where she can have a good time and do well at something. I don't think Mr. Knightly was in line when he aimed those comments at her. She didn't appear to be in need of a set down this time, so his irritation with her is mysterious. One more little indicator that Mr. Knightly may not ALWAYS be perfect!
