When I read your post I had just put a note in the margin beside the passage you quote:


"Cast the mote from your own eye Emma!"

What a curious mix Emma is. Only a few paragraphs earlier her conscience is troubling her about betraying her suspicions of Jane Fairfax's feelings to Frank Churchill. Now she is blithely criticising the Coxes for faults which she herself displays and is totally unaware of the inconsistency.

I think these sort of details make Emma such a very human and believable character. I also love the way JA does not draw attention to these points - she just slips them in and leaves the reader to notice them or not. It's really quite masterly.
