encompass more than the social situation of the moment but rather her entire rearing. Just as Mr. Knightley may not be in the best postition to understand & thus criticise Frank Churchill's dependence on his uncle & aunt, we who are not under the same social disadvantages as Harriet must take pains to have compassion on her position in both of these relationships. She is the little worm being fought over by a robin & a hawk. (I leave it to you to decide which is which!).

& to spare you a post to inform me that your use of shoes & boots is figurative--I know.
