I think the Martins' self-respect Written by Joan Ellen (4/20/2008 12:32 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, How rude would it have been to keep Miss Woodhouse waiting?, penned by Tarn

would prevent them from making the smallest attempt to keep Harriet from going, once the 'summons' had been received.

The quarter of an hour brought her punctually to the white gate again; and Miss Smith receiving her summons, was with her without delay...

As for Harriet, she does what Miss Woodhouse tells her. She has many good qualities, but I don't think 'spine' is one of them. ;-)
