I agree with Julie's comments below about 'a pretty but prudent and prosperous place to live'. That is what she lost for Harriet. This description of the Martins' home, and of the visit, made me so, so angry with Emma. How dare she behave like this, twisting etiquette and social 'rules' to wound such good people? I have not seen Mark Strong's Mr Knightley, but I am beginning to understand why a portrayal of him might well be angry most of the time!

Nonsensical girl? Hateful, snobby, destructive girl! She is going to have to do a lot to make up for this.
