I think the Martin family   Written by JulieW (4/20/2008 5:03 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Espalier apple-trees, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

would have been quite hurt by the lack of condescention on Emma's part- she clearly showed they were beneath her noticed by pointedly not making any effort to meet with them, simply dropping Harriet off for her visit.

But most importnatly they would have been hurt by the rigidly correct formality of Harriets visit. A visit of 14 minutes duration only : this from a girl who last year, when she posessed no friends or connections, was entertained for weeks in a most friendly, open-hearted way in the midst of this family. Indeed, almost becoming part of it.

Tut, tut, Emma. I really think this dreadful use of etiquette is the worst side of Emma. She knows the rules of society and instead of bending and making everyone comfortable and at ease, which I believe is the best form of etiquette, she sticks rigidly to the rules and insists poor Harriet follows her example. She really needs a good shake, sometimes.
