So what the Martins are doing is creating a pretty but prudent and prosperous place to live. It is, in fact, a typical English cotage garden,where fruit and vegtables are grown in conjunction with ormamental plants. Space was of prime importance,and so a cottage garden not only looked pretty but was productive in the most practical sense, too. There are lots of references to apples-possibly the most famous and ancient of English fruits- in Emma,and though I didn't intend it,its become a sort of theme/focus for me this group read. |
