The Fruit of Knowledge, you know   Written by Tarn (4/20/2008 2:19 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Espalier apple-trees, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

All neatly tied back and well controlled by people of reason at the Martins place, of course!

The laws of the picturesque would require the apple trees to be part of an ancient orchard, old and utterly neglegted (so its trunk is twisted and convoluted for interesting chiaroscuro effects).

For the Martins, espalier is economical with space, and gives a large yield that is easy to gather. It is totally inattentive to appearances, in that clipped and controlled trees are not the fashion, but if comfort and practicality can be forgiven, they make a very pretty avenue.
