Are you new?

Of course Emma could simply be working on the assumption that Mr Elton would not fail to inform his neighbours of whatever connexions his beloved had to boast (such as the sister's husband), but does she have access to any other kind of reference?

Would Miss Hawkins absence from the arrivals columns of the Bath newspapers have been significant? (and would Emma have access to the Bath papers anyway?)

Does Emma have some Regency equivalent of "Who's Who" to consult? Could she have any independant sources at all?
