I agree with you that a guest is not under an obligation to talk about her acquaintances. That's why I said, in the post you replied to: "If Jane does not want to talk about the Dixons, that is her choice." Clearly that sentence did not make it clear that I believed that Jane was under no obligation to talk about the Dixons. Is there anything I can say that will convince you that I believe that Jane was under no obligation to exchange gossip about the Dixons?

Turning to your other point, it may indeed be the responsibility of the host to find a topic of conversation that interests the guest. But that's very hard work if the guest is not interested in meeting the host halfway. I can hardly blame Emma for not being overwhelmed with friendship towards someone who is cold, cautious, and seems determined to hazard nothing. A hosts' obligations may be immutable, but friendship is a two-way process.
