Emma began to have suspicions of Jane   Written by Graciela (4/18/2008 1:51 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Emma & Jane - Unknown truths, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

when Miss Bates told her that Jane was not accompanying the Campbells to Ireland.

At this moment, an ingenious and animating suspicion entering Emma's brain with regard to Jane Fairfax, this charming Mr. Dixon, and the not going to Ireland, she said, with the insidious design of further discovery,

"You must feel it very fortunate that Miss Fairfax should be allowed to come to you at such a time. Considering the very particular friendship between her and Mrs. Dixon, you could hardly have expected her to be excused from accompanying Colonel and Mrs. Campbell." (Ch. 19)

This is before Miss Bates relates that Mr. Dixon saved Miss Fairfax from falling out of the boat. I don't think why would be suspicious that a man saved a woman from drowning; I suppose it would be more suspicious if *Mrs. Dixon* had fallen out of the boat, and he had done nothing to save *her* ;-)
