Austen always stops short of making anyone seem perfectly consistent or perfectly virtuous. As you say, it's subtle--but we can take in such subtlies when we meet real people, even if we don't notice we're taking them in at the time. With Austen, it's almost as if we can "read" their body language and other nonverbal communication.
