rencontre: Another French word, and a naval term, to describe that kind of casual engagement between small ships, that is not of any account to admirals or the course of the war, but is of enormous importance to the ambitions of midshipmen and masters because their fame and fortune rely on them.

Just the perfect word to describe the first fateful meeting of Mr Elton and a Miss Hawkins.
