And what exactly is a Regular Family?   Written by Tarn (4/17/2008 2:14 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Etiquette as a weapon…, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

A newly married middle aged couple and their semi-adopted stepson (biological child of the father)? An elderly man and his carer/daughter? Mr Knightley and William Larkins?

Certainly not "regular" as in "regally appointed" - maybe Mr Knightley could be considered as being a "regular family" in that sense, but not Hartfield, or Randalls.

Or maybe it is a slighting reference to the fact that the Coles only blew into town ten years ago - so the Coles and the single men about town might be considered "irregulars" in a military sense, compared to their more permanently settled neighbours.

By the by, I suspect the friends of Frank Churchill have made some delicate manoeuvres behind the scenes to prompt the presumptive invitation from goodhearted Mrs Cole. Without suspecting her of anything but goodwill, Mrs Cole would have known such an invitation was hopeless as Mr Woodhouse never went out to dinner, and it would be much better for her and her husband to take tea with him one summer afternoon, instead.
