Are you new?

I have always noticed this in the corner of my mind, but have not thought about it too much. What was the reason for this segregation?

Harriet appears to be good enough for having dinner with the Woodhouses, but not with the Coles. Is Mrs. Bates dinner material for Mr.Woodhouse, but not her daughter or niece for the Coles? Are the Bates never invited to dinner with the Coles, then? I thought they mixed more! I am really puzzled by this segregation.

But most of all, the difference is great in Jane Fairfax, who must always mix with the best families when she is with the Campbells, but must "sink" to a lower rung when she is with her aunt and grandmother...
