A bit more precise than that Written by Tracy W (4/15/2008 10:37 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Question, penned by Robbin

I read "not contributing what she ought to the stock of their scanty comforts" as referring to Emma not visiting the Bateses. If Emma visited the Bateses as much as she ought then she would be contributing to their stock of scanty comforts, regardless of whether she liked or disliked the visits.
