You are right the text does not say Emma dislikes giving the Bates material gifts; it does not have too. The text says Emma does not contribute “what she ought to the stock of their scanty comforts” instead. If you agree stocks refers to supplies; do you still see Emma’s “not contributing what she ought to the stock of their scanty comforts” as referring to her dislike of visiting the Bates?
