we have seen many examples of Emma's generosity in material things- when the older ladies come to dinner, the porker, and the broth for the poor. These incidents are a sample to help us understand Emma's character.

In fact, it is stressed in the novel so far that she does more than what her father feels is necessary. It is only in visiting and being charitable to her neighbours that Emma is deficient.
