There was no formal adoption   Written by JulieW (4/14/2008 10:58 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Jane and the Campbells, penned by Anne-Marie
Are you new?

process in our era. That didn't happen in England and Wales until teh 20th century, 1926 to be precise ;-)

What could happen, and did happen in the case of JA's brother, Edward Austen Knight, was that a couple other than the child's family could bring them up then leave them property in a will on condition that the child then took their name. Thus the child was provided for and the family name perpetuated.

As Mr and Mrs Campbell were not in a position to leave Jane anything ( no money) there was no need for them to insist she changed her name: by giving her an education and thereby the means of being a governess/companion and sporting herself they did her a very great service.
