is that she is a snob, which has led her to do serious mischief in interfering between Harriet and Robert Martin. But I agree with you that she has many admirable qualities, especially her devotion to her father's happiness. Given how much she has to endure on that point, and how cheerfully and patiently she does endure it - never even complains about it! - it doesn't seem so unreasonable to me that when she has a little respite from Mr. Woodhouse (though she might not consciously consider herself as needing any respite from him) she prefers not to spend it with Miss Bates.
