Emma isnīt that bad...   Written by MarianneR (4/13/2008 10:23 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, A waste of time…, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

You wrote "Emma not doing what she ought to enhance the scanty comforts of the Bates is a huge contrast to the compassion and kindness she gives the poor..."

I also think that Emma could show some more kindness to the Bates as she does but this doesnīt mean that she does nothing at all. In ch.21 we read that after killing a porker she arranged that part of it be sent to them:

"My dear papa, I sent the whole hind-quarter. I knew you would wish it.

Might be she did it rather because her father expected her so, but inspite of all her aversion to the Bates I think she manages quite well not to show it openly. She knows what she should do to them and she actually does it.
