You wrote "Emma not doing what she ought to enhance the scanty comforts of the Bates is a huge contrast to the compassion and kindness she gives the poor..."

I also think that Emma could show some more kindness to the Bates as she does but this doesn´t mean that she does nothing at all. In ch.21 we read that after killing a porker she arranged that part of it be sent to them:

"My dear papa, I sent the whole hind-quarter. I knew you would wish it.

Might be she did it rather because her father expected her so, but inspite of all her aversion to the Bates I think she manages quite well not to show it openly. She knows what she should do to them and she actually does it.
