That's a funny one...   Written by Robbin (4/12/2008 2:45 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Speaking of glass--glass houses:, penned by nan duval
Are you new?

The description reminds me of Emma, but there are some big differences between her and Mr. Elton. I think Emma is genuinely compassionate and caring of other people in spite of the fact she does stomp all over Harriet and Mr. Martin's feelings whereas I think Mr. Elton really is lacking in compassion and kindness. I think Emma has a good character but is quite wrong-headed at times—she really examines her conscience after Mr. Elton proposes and I think she faced some truths although I am not sure how far they are going to stick. On the other hand, I am not sure Mr. Elton has a very good character; he seems to do things basically for his benefit alone and I don’t know that he ever visited those cottagers. Emma makes decisions and does not realize they are as influenced by what she wants as much as what she thinks she is doing for Harriet. I guess what I am trying to say is that Emma’s faults while similar to Mr. Elton’s do not have the same ambition for herself that he does. (;D)
