from the individual human standpoint, have much less to do with statistical likelihood than with wishes & prejudices. A group of scientists designing an experiment have expectations of results based on familiarity with the literature on these sorts of experiments, results of previous similar experiments & the nature of the subjects of experimentation. An individual in a situation has "information" that has been filtered through their emotions & is more likely to form expectations based less on data than bias.
