as 'having been a valetudinarian all his life' -- which makes it all the more puzzling how he ever managed to get married, or to persuade a lady of 'talents' (which Mr. Knightley says in chapter 5 that Emma inherited from her mother) to marry him. It does make one wonder about the late Mrs. W, her personality, and what her situation prior to marrying must have been!
