I love this sequence, agree with you, and have been trying to catch Jane Austen in the act of making me care about what happens to Emma, even though there are so many times when I really don't like her. I've boiled it down to, mostly, liking Mr. Knightley, and hoping for his sake that she'll improve her character, which she does seem capable of doing with proper guidance.
