Anywhere but Highbury & especially in London, Emma would be one among several, if not many rich, moderately accomplished, daughters of gentlemen of old established families. She would have had the mortification of encountering young ladies who were richer, better connected, or much more accomplished--if not all three. In Highbury, noone will notice or say that the Empress has no clothes.
