Even if Hartfield went to a male relative, she will have the money. The custom of JA times was to invest it at an annual interest of 4 or 5%; that means that Emma will have 1200 or 1500 pounds a year; enough to live well.

(Just to compare costs: in P&P six persons live well with 2000 pounds a year)
