The face of someone you really like is a real pleasure, regardless of whether they are 'handsome' or not. The handsomest or prettiest face in the world is soon of no interest if the owner is a pain in the neck.
Besides, tastes differ in these matters. Consider the vigorous disputes which have broken out from time to time over the attractiveness or otherwise of the actors playing Mr Knightley in Emma 2 and Emma 3.
In the novel though, I am inclined to trust Mr Knightley's judgement. I imagine Mr Elton to be a man with conventional good looks (regular features etc), but if he is conscious of his looks that would put me off very quickly. So far in the novel, as he reads on the page he is the most irritating character we have met.
