about who is vain inside and out, and is not considered a good trait by Mr K! I think it was mentioned earlier on, by Emma, that Mr Elton had the living and an investment besides. For this reason she considered him a better catch for Harriet than Robert Martin.

I wonder how she came by this information? Was it just gossip? This would mean Mr Elton did not desperately "need" to marry up, but wanted to for his own vanity.

If he was handsome, yet vain for it, all the more reason to suspect his character? Is this what Mr K is getting at?
