October?   Written by Barbara (4/5/2008 11:00 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Omitted from the Hartfied edition, penned by Tarn
Are you new?

Harriet's visit with the Martins was during the late summer (August, maybe into September) and that's when he got the walnuts for Harriet. I don't really understand the connection you're making, either to Emma or to MSND with the comment about the walnuts.

I don't think the MSND reference in Emma is meant to set up any sort of ___________ IS ________________ correlation between the novel characters and the charcters in the play---nothing so simple! Many of the book characters 'play' various roles at various times.

I only meant to suggest that Emma is quoting from the Shakespeare play without apparently being aware of all the problems that have been caused by characters in the play trying to interfere when it comes to matchmaking, and possibly without having read the play all the way through, as she is quoting from the very first scene in the play. This would be in keeping with her reading habits to start but not to finish.
