This passage always strikes me forcibly, because up to this point in the novel, everything Emma says and does gives me the impression of someone who always IS absolutely satisfied with herself, and entirely convinced that her opinions are right. These uncomfortable feelings have probably never been roused in her by anyone other than Mr. Knightley, the only one who ever tells her of her faults.
