because he was referring to Mrs. Weston and Emma, not a husband and wife. I do think he is speaking in a sarcastic, tongue in cheek manner, trying to show how Emma has everyone wrapped around her finger.

If, on the other hand it was a different reference, I would have felt as you do - even with the difference in society between then and now.
