A young man like Robert Martin probably would not have a taste for novels that were written to appeal to young women (I would imagine they're the equivalent of a 'chick flick'). It does indeed sound as if Mr. Martin is always trying to improve at his work and has hopes of getting to a better station in life. Emma won't admit it, but the man is a good catch for her friend.
